February 25, 2022Hypertension defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline is more accurate than 2018 ESC/ESH for detecting early vascular aging in young adults
Various hypertension guidelines have different blood pressure (BP) thresholds irrespective of age. Coelho’s and colleagues investigated 1775 participants, averaging 38 years old, and classified based on lower (ACC/AHA 2017) and higher (ESC/ESH 2018) BP thresholds to determine its capability in capturing the EVA population. Using ACC/AHA criteria, 52% of normotensive per ESC/ESH were reclassified as hypertensive. ACC/AHA, whilst identified more young adults with EVA, it only had 22.3% accuracy. This underscores that including, arterial health assessments alongside BP, regardless of thresholds, offers more targeted detection and prevention of EVA in young adults.
