March 22, 2016Association of Insulin Resistance, Arterial Stiffness and Telomere Length in Adults Free of Cardiovascular Diseases
Irina Strazhesko and colleagues studied 303 individuals without known heart diseases to explore insulin resistance’s role in arterial aging. Their findings indicated that insulin resistance and age were linked to increased pulse wave velocity, while telomere length showed a negative correlation. This highlights the relevance of glucose metabolism markers in arterial stiffness, even within normal ranges. High-normal fasting glucose levels were independently associated with target organ damage and vascular dysfunction, and non-diabetic men with elevated fasting glucose levels faced a higher cardiovascular mortality risk.
