March 9, 2024Metabolomic Signature of Early Vascular Aging (EVA) in Hypertension
Arterial stiffness is a biomarker of vascular aging that reflects both chronologic and biological aging. A study led by Katarzyna Polonis at Lund University used metabolomics to identify plasma metabolites associated with early vascular aging syndrome in hypertensive individuals. Lower levels of metabolites (lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC)) were linked to a higher risk of developing EVA syndrome. Although LPCs have been shown previously to be positively associated with inflammation and atherosclerosis, these studies showed that hypertensive individuals characterized by lower metabolites had 3.8 times higher risk of EVA compared to those with higher LPC levels.
