April 14, 2022The Effect of an mRNA Vaccine Against COVID-19 on Endothelial Function and Arterial Stiffness
The mRNA COVID-19 vaccine leads to an increase in inflammatory markers and temporary decline in endothelial function, but these effects are short-term and do not pose a cardiovascular risk. A team at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens led by Dimitrios Terentes-Printzios reported that the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine causes an increase in inflammatory markers, particularly after the second dose, which leads to a temporary decline in endothelial function. However, this effect is reversible within 48 hours, and the vaccine is considered safe for cardiovascular health.
