B Jani at Imperial College London discussed the impact of aging on vascular health. As people age, physiological changes occur, affecting the mechanical and structural properties of the vascular wall. This leads to decreased arterial elasticity and compliance, which can be quantified using metrics such as pulse wave velocity and augmentation index. Monitoring arterial compliance could offer an early indicator of cardiovascular risk and help evaluate the cardiovascular effects of medications. The decline in arterial compliance can be ameliorated through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
