A team from the Birmingham City Hospital led by James Castleman studied 115 women and found increased prevalence of prehypertension and increased arterial stiffness in pregnant women previously affected by gestational hypertensive disease. These women are at increased future cardiovascular risk due to altered cardiac and vascular function and require effective risk mitigation. The authors suggest that when prehypertension is identified, primary prevention strategies such as lifestyle modification, can be implemented.
